BEGINNINGS

Navjot Altaf was born at Meerut, Uttar Pradesh. 1974-79 she worked with PROYOM, Progressive Youth Movement. 1974 travelled widely in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. 1977 travelled extensively in the Gulf Countries. 1992 she made a short film called "Links Destroyed & Rediscovered"(11 minutes). In 1994 she designed the book, "Nasreen in Retrospect" with Bharati Kapadia which was edited by Altaf. 1997 presented a paper: At the Symposium - "Urban and Village Women Artists of India", U.C. Berkeley Art Museum, USA. 1999 she was invited to present a paper at a conference on "Indigenous Asia, Knowledge, Technology and Gender Relation", Asion Institute of Technology, Bangkok. In 1999 she presented a paper at Fukoka Asian Art Museum seminar during the First Asian Art Triennial. In 1999 she was invited to participate in a slide session, "Where lies the Frame", a part of a Symposium of Women artists and writers "Expression as Empowerment", organised by Majlis, Max Muller Bhavan, Mumbai. 1999-

  • STYLE

    Navjot is a distinguished painter, sculptor, installation artist and filmmaker. Inspired by Marxist ideologies, she has consciously questioned various frameworks of social injustice bringing to her work a sense of social commitment. Explorative and experimental in material and medium, the artist maps the trajectories of memory, history and culture, interrogating the "body-politics", seeing the self as the source of knowledge, and articulating one`s own experience to address issues related to social politics and art
